Trashi yangtse

Trashi Yangtse is a rapidly growing town and the administrative center for this district. Situated in a small river valley, it is a lovely spot from which to take walks in the surrounding countryside. The Dzong overlooking the town was built in the late 1990s when the new district was created. Trashi Yangtse is famous for its wooden containers and bowls, which make inexpensive, attractive and useful mementos of a visit to this remote region. The College for Zorig Chusum, where students study the thirteen traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan, is also worth a visit.

Chhorten Kora

Chhorten Kora, built in 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday, is a stupa designed similarly to Nepal’s Boudhanath stupa. It was constructed to allow pilgrims from eastern Bhutan and India to visit without traveling to Nepal. The annual Chhorten Kora festival is unique in Bhutan as it doesn’t feature traditional dances, but instead attracts thousands of people, including pilgrims from Bhutan and India, especially the Dakpa tribe from the State of Arunachal Pradesh, India, who participate in the Dakpa Kora circumambulation ritual.

The stupa holds significant historical and spiritual importance and is a major pilgrimage site in eastern Bhutan. Visitors are encouraged to circumambulate the stupa to experience its sacredness.

Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary is located in north-western Bhutan, spans 1,545 sq.km., with an additional 420 sq.km. buffer zone across parts of Trashi Yangtse, Lhuntse, and Mongar districts. It borders Tibet (China) to the north and India to the north-east. The sanctuary is home to around 100 mammal species, including globally endangered ones like the snow leopard, Royal Bengal Tiger, and Red Panda. Every year, from mid-November to early March, approximately 150 black-necked-cranes migrate to Bumdeling for the winter. The sanctuary is also a haven for butterflies, with 130 species recorded and another 120 expected. In addition to its natural beauty, the sanctuary is rich in cultural and religious sites, including Rigsum Goenpa, the mystical Singye Dzong, and Dechhen Phodrang temple, considered one of the most scenic monasteries in Bhutan.
