The sanctuary is located in north-western Bhutan, spans 1,545 sq.km., with an additional 420 sq.km. buffer zone across parts of Trashi Yangtse, Lhuntse, and Mongar districts. It borders Tibet (China) to the north and India to the north-east. The sanctuary is home to around 100 mammal species, including globally endangered ones like the snow leopard, Royal Bengal Tiger, and Red Panda. Every year, from mid-November to early March, approximately 150 black-necked-cranes migrate to Bumdeling for the winter. The sanctuary is also a haven for butterflies, with 130 species recorded and another 120 expected. In addition to its natural beauty, the sanctuary is rich in cultural and religious sites, including Rigsum Goenpa, the mystical Singye Dzong, and Dechhen Phodrang temple, considered one of the most scenic monasteries in Bhutan.
